Since the beginning of time we have watched birds in flight, admiring this ability that humans do not possess, at least not in nature. Mankind has since mimicked the design of wings in an attempt to acquire this powerful yet graceful avian ability.
Where Two Or More Are Gathered
In the bible there is an expression, “Where two or more are gathered”, and while it’s own depth and meaning is not so much the topic here, not directly, we see the parallel in how much power we have as a group. When we look into the sky and see a group of birds flying we, historically, have learned to pay attention.
Meaning of Flight
There is the migratory meaning of birds in flight as they travel south for the winter. The symbolic meaning of this purposeful flight gives signs of the upcoming winter. Though we do not take to the roads and travel south like the birds do we have learned how to “read” or interpret these signs and use them in our preparations for the harshness of the winter months.
What about when it is not about a seasonal change of venue, is there meaning to the gathering and flight of many birds? Some will take the appearance of birds as a symbol within their own life to help them bring more awareness to events in the human world. Others may look at the direction taken in that flight, and find some symbolic meaning based on the medicine wheel or other earth-science.
Flight or Fleeing?
Birds can take flight, and ground-based animals flee as well, as disaster approaches. Many of us have understood, in hindsight, why our pets have behaved in such bizarre ways. Being captive they cannot “run away” as they would in nature, and so they exhibit stress and unusual behavior. When a tsunami approaches the wildlife will disappear, heading to higher ground. How do they know such an event is coming? There may be some subtle shifts in the earth that we have yet learned to measure, or it could be a perception that takes place on a higher or spiritual plane. We may see ourselves as the divine ones, the combination of precious soul within a body, but animals exhibit their own level of consciousness and spiritual presence.
When birds fly together it may be a ritual of the twilight, something I have observed with the crows. I have seen the vultures fly around the bend, gliding so gracefully to their summer perch, appearing almost still in their flight as thought they were magicians in the air. I have also seen on occasion a more playful flight as the vultures circle and sway, not in the same way as their hunt, but as a group “expression”.
Reading the “Signs”
We continue to this day to watch the signs within the skys, admiring rainbows, reading of tomorrow in the twilight sky. Whether for pleasure or purpose we will continue to watch as birds gather in flight, and find our own purposeful meaning within the experience.
